Feet first: Lauren Barbour and Ian McLaren set for a fiery challenge

Staff from two Aberdeen marketing and communications firms will bare the soles of their feet next month as they take on a fiery charity challenge.  Employees of Greybar Design and Innes Associates will be among a group of up to 80 people walking over hot coals on bonfire night to raise money for Aberdeen-based charity Inspire.

The charity has organised a firewalk to raise money to help the hundreds of individuals with learning disabilities that it supports across north-east Scotland.

The team of four, Steve Duguid, Lauren Barbour, Charlie Innes and Ian McLaren, will brave temperatures of around 800 degrees as they walk barefoot over the burning embers.

Commenting on behalf of the group, Charlie Innes, managing director of Innes Associates, said: “The firewalk is going to be a real challenge for us all and, no doubt, will involve a lot of mind over matter.  The last thing our survival instincts tell us to do is to walk over hot coals, but we’re assured that we won’t suffer any burnt feet and that the sense of achievement we’ll feel will be worth it.

“Between the four of us, we aim to raise around £1,000 for Inspire.  Having met some of the people Inspire supports, you realise what a difference the charity makes to their lives.  It’s estimated that there are about 1.5million people in the UK who have a learning disability, so it’s great to be raising money to support just a fraction of that number and know the difference our efforts will make.”

Fiona Poustie, Inspire’s head of fundraising and marketing, said: “This is our first firewalk and we’ve had a really positive response from people wanting to take part.  It’s fantastic that people, such as the guys from Greybar Design and Innes Associates, want to take on an adventurous personal challenge and raise money for Inspire in the process.  Without their support and fundraising, we wouldn’t be able to continue to develop services that empower the people we support to become more independent, access increased opportunities and increase their quality of life.”

The firewalk will take place at Aberdeen’s Queens Links on Friday, 05 November at approximately 7.00pm, ahead of Aberdeen City Council’s annual fireworks display which gets underway at 8:00pm.
